A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Disciplinary Hearing

The simple truth is that legal ethics is not much different from ethics in general. There are very basic things that lawyers must do (and not do) to avoid disciplinary problems. In this hilarious presentation, Mr. Carter explores some of the more outrageous disciplinary cases that come before state bar committees and how lawyers can avoid being a part of them. Lawyers and legal staff persons alike will learn:

- Why legal ethics isn't an oxymoron
- The “real” source of most complaints against lawyers
- How to do unto others before they sue unto you

Lies, Damn Lies, and Legal Marketing

In an increasingly crowded legal marketplace, lawyers are discovering that effective legal marketing is essential to a thriving practice. Yet, in their zeal to effectively promote their services, it is paramount that lawyers remember they must abide by a code of conduct far more stringent than that imposed upon the typical marketer. In this fast-paced presentation, Mr. Carter explores the do's (and mostly don'ts) of marketing under the code of legal ethics. Mr. Carter will:

- Show the best (and worst) of televised lawyer ads
- Discuss the current debate surrounding “Best Lawyer” and “Super Lawyer” status
- Examine the ethical implications of using seminars, columns, and blogs as marketing tools

Sue Unto Others As You Would Have Them Sue Unto You

Increasingly, lawyer civility is becoming an oxymoron, but it doesn't have to be that way. Civil litigation need not lead to all-out civil war. As legal professionals, lawyers have an obligation to act just that way–professionally. It's possible to be courteous, kind, accommodating, and effective. In this presentation, Sean Carter shares his wacky, irreverent, yet insightful thoughts on professionalism and ethics. Specifically, Mr. Carter explains how to put the “civil” back into civil litigation.
