COLAP Presents:  The Science of Stress Management – Implementing Strategies in a Hybrid World
The practice of law is stressful under normal circumstances, but over the past few years we have all experienced significantly higher levels of distress. When we experience sudden changes in routine, exposure to upsetting information, loss, grief, fear, physical illness, and financial strain, our nervous systems activate a prolonged survival response that has comprehensive effects on our well-being and health. You are not alone if you have felt overwhelmed with urgent demands on your time, experienced anxiety, depression, fatigue, lack of motivation, sleep difficulties or a quicker temper, had difficulty juggling multiple personal and professional issues, had trouble navigating exposure to clients’ stress and trauma, and been distraught or discouraged by national or worldwide events.

The silver lining is that we can all be more resilient by bouncing-back quicker and more readily to improve our cognitive, physical, and emotional health, even during difficult times. This presentation will cover supportive tips for coping and help you understand the neurobiology and neurophysiology of stress, why and how stress is contagious, and how to work with your own stress response to prevent or mitigate compassion fatigue and secondary trauma. In addition, free, practical, and inclusive ways to mitigate the negative consequences of chronic and prolonged stress or lack of self-care will be provided. We will also discuss how COLAP assists the legal community in preventing and addressing issues such as burnout, stress-related illnesses, and behavioral health struggles that negatively impact their practice, relationships, health, and quality of life.

Sleep: An Essential Component of Health and Well-Being
In the past five years, it has been routinely reported by researchers and the media alike that Americans are notoriously sleep deprived. There are numerous reasons why this may be the case. Yet while many people look towards improving their health via diet, exercise and ceasing bad consumption habits (e.g., junk food, cigarettes), sleep is often overlooked—or is it? Sleep medications will surpass $5 billion in annual sales within the next year. Apparently not only are Americans having difficulty getting sufficient quantities of quality sleep, they are also having difficulties getting to sleep. This workshop provides the latest research findings regarding the importance of sleep and offers attorneys suggestions on how to improve their sleep according to priority and quality measures.
