Trauma-Informed Practice

An Attorney Wellness Program!

Program Description:

Attorneys in many practice areas work with traumatized clients and individuals. Trauma-informed care, an educated understanding, identification, and sensitive response to the effects of trauma, has been a common practice in the mental health and social services communities for many years. Similarly, lawyers, as a helping profession, can benefit from training on the existence and impact of trauma.
This program will help you understand and recognize trauma, training you to respond and appropriately communicate with a person suffering from trauma. Additionally, you will learn about secondary trauma, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, and the tools you can use to prevent burnout. Overall, this program will give you strategies to improve client relationships, to better serve your clients and care for yourself.

An invaluable program! You will leave with concrete tips and tangible solutions that directly impact your professional practice and improve your personal satisfaction

This Program Will Provide You Tools to:
- Understand and Recognize Trauma

Secondary Stress, Vicarious Trauma, and Compassion Fatigue
Stress isn’t all bad. On a day-to-day basis, it motivates us to get our to-do list accomplished and, in extreme cases, it can save our lives. However, when we become overwhelmed, our stress response isn’t working for us; it’s working against us, causing many negative side effects that can compromise our health, our relationships, and even our work. Being exposed to other people’s stress, trauma, or graphic forensic evidence can make this even worse. Compassion fatigue occurs when someone is regularly exposed to other people’s stress and essentially “takes on” other people’s problems as their own. It is not burnout, but it can lead to burnout. This presentation will help you understand and mitigate the effects of secondary stress, vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue.
Presented by Sarah Myers, Esq., LMFT, LAC, Executive Director, Colorado Lawyer Assistance Program (COLAP)

2:20 PM
Understanding Your Background and Addressing Personal Trauma
One of the risk factors associated with working with survivors of trauma is managing our own reactions to our client's stories. Given that, unfortunately, trauma and traumatic loss are more common than most people acknowledge, and many service providers come into the field with our own wounds or experience wounding while working in the field. This workshop will speak to the importance of self-awareness, management of our own counter-transference reactions, and an understanding of how the wounds of the provider and survivor may interact.
Presented by Kristy Eldredge, EdD, LPC, NCC, ACS
