Computer Competence for Lawyers

Program Description:

Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct
Rule 1.1 Competence

Thoroughness and Preparation
[5] Competent handling of a particular matter includes inquiry into and analysis of the factual and legal elements of the problem, and use of methods and procedures meeting the standards of competent practitioners.

Maintaining Competence
[8] To maintain the requisite knowledge and skill, a lawyer should keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, and changes in communications and other relevant technologies, engage in continuing study and education, and comply with all continuing legal education requirements to which the lawyer is subject. See Comments [18] and [19] to Rule 1.6

Ethics rules require that lawyers maintain a basic level of competence in modern methods and technology. If you have any doubts about your own computer competence, then you owe it to yourself and your clients to address those concerns. This program will bring some perspectives from the court about ways that computer competence affects the legal process. It will focus on bridging gaps in basic computer skills and learning to use computers more efficiently in your law practice.
