Essential Spanish for the Legal Professional

2007

In collaboration with the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, Colorado Bar Association CLE is pleased to bring to you this exceptional program “Essential Spanish for Legal Professionals.”  Effective legal representation of Spanish-speaking clients in the United States and abroad requires a sophisticated set of legal, cultural and language skills that can only be taught by experienced legal professionals. The “Essential Spanish for Legal Professionals” Program offers participants a unique opportunity to learn these skills, expand their practice, and improve service to Hispanic clients.  This 4-session program is designed to teach students basic conversational skills, basic vocabulary related to the law and law practice areas, and cultural values that interfere with the interaction between law professionals and Spanish native speakers so they can communicate properly with Hispanic clients and their families.

BASIC FUNDAMENTALS PART 1 - (OFFERED DURING SESSION 1, 2, 3 AND 4):
After completing this course, participants will be able to introduce themselves and other legal professionals, complete a client intake form in Spanish, and give directions to law offices and court buildings. Participants will also begin to use proper grammatical structure leading to more complex conversation.

BASIC FUNDAMENTALS PART 2 - (OFFERED DURING SESSION 1, 2, 3 AND 4):
If you have a basic understanding of Spanish, but still have difficulties communicating orally and in writing in everyday situations, this course is designed to refresh your memory. Once “refreshed”, this course moves at an accelerated pace to prepare you for more complex legal conversation.  Participants will be able to discuss retainers, confidentiality, have more detailed interviews with clients, and connect emotionally with clients (icebreakers).

WORKING WITH CLIENTS PART 1- (OFFERED DURING SESSION 1, 2, 3 AND 4):
This interactive course emphasizes oral and written communication and provides more comprehensive coverage of complex grammar structures. Participants will reinforce their Spanish-speaking abilities while focusing on the practice of law. Additionally, participants will begin working on contracts, forms, and an introduction of drafting legal documents in Spanish.

WORKING WITH CLIENTS PART 2 - (OFFERED DURING SESSION 2, 3, AND 4 ONLY):
This intensive class is designed for the Spanish-proficient, practicing lawyer who has a Spanish speaking clientele, or is developing one. The course (taught entirely in Spanish) will focus on key topics in four areas of law: Criminal, Family, Immigration, Labor, and the judicial system, in the context of how these might apply, or be explained to the Hispanic client.  The key topics will be taught by local attorneys specializing in their respective areas of law. The course will expose the lawyer to practical legal vocabulary, sample documents that may be relevant to legal representation, and review relevant areas of reading, writing and verbal comprehension in Spanish. Finally, a judge⁄magistrate will give tips on how to explain the judicial system in Spanish to foreign-born Spanish speakers, and understand the role of interpreters in the system.
