Estate Planning and Trust Management for a Brave New World:
It’s All in the Family…What’s a Family?
Estate planning strategies are often based on a traditional definition of a family - a husband and wife who
married at an early age, bought a home, had children and worked toward financial security. Today, that “traditional family” represents only one third of American households. With the rise of same-sex couples, cohabiting couples, blended families, adoption and surrogacy, it is clear that there is no one “traditional American family.” U.S. law, however, has not kept pace with the evolution of the American family. In this presentation, we will review generational attributes and how these attributes are reshaping the American family, and explore contemporary practices in wealth management, estate planning and trust design, and family collaboration, decision making, and governance.
Presented by R. Hugh Magill, Esq., Vice Chairman, Northern Trust Corporation

Our Firm — An Original Readers Theatre Play
Written by Spencer J. Crona, Esq., Brown & Crona, LLC, and David Struthers, Esq., Dill, Dill, Carr, Stonbraker, and Hutchings, P.C.
This premier production original play is a tangible experience of the law we practice in Trusts and Estates, presented in three acts of metatheater by an august assembly of a dozen mighty art players from within our own ranks. Join our “company” as we explore the dilemmas, dramas, discord and accord of the work we do, mindful always of the ethical choices and escarpments we encounter, the solutions we craft, and the documents we draft. That which we so often take for granted and routine is also that which our clients may never experience again. What is second nature to us is a daunting new world for our clients, as they travail in strife and grief, which we only observe or apprehend yet try in advocacy to vindicate. To us, as we discharge our duty, “[t]hese indeed seem, for they are actions that a man might play, But I have that within which passes show, These but the trappings and the suits of woe.”
- Hamlet, in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act I, Scene 2.
