Understanding Behavioral Health Issues, Consequences of Untreated Mental Illness - Webcast

July 2018

Understanding Behavioral Health Issues, Consequences of Untreated Mental Illness, and Working with This Population

Quarterly Mental Health Lunch Series!

Program Description

Working with clients who have a serious mental illness presents many different challenges. Often those afflicted by mental illness lack the insight and awareness to advocate for their own best interests. A lack of insight and failure to function independently can become grave enough to require significant supervision and assistance from others. In such cases, professional help is a necessity and often a client's legal status must be affected to administer proper treatment. Individuals being treated involuntarily for a mental illness are offered a court-appointed attorney to represent their legal interests. This presentation will provide fundamental knowledge about common mental illnesses, how such diagnoses manifest and progress, challenges faced by this population, and discussion of basic treatment modalities. Best practices for interacting with clients who are experiencing a behavioral health crisis will also be addressed.

Jonathan Culwell is an attorney practicing at the law firm of Glatstein & O'Brien, LLP. He takes probate matters in guardianship, conservatorship, estate administration, appeals, and drafts estate plans for individuals and families. Jonathan also focuses his practice on housing matters including landlord tenant law and select common interest community law. Prior to joining Glatstein & O'Brien, Jonathan Culwell built his practice through the independent law office of Culwell Law Ltd. where he found that his advocacy for persons facing involuntary treatment for mental illness is a meaningful and needed endeavor. When he is not practicing law, Jonathan enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, gardening, and skiing.

Melanie Taussig is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and works in Community Outreach at Clear View Behavioral Health in Johnstown. Before beginning her Social Work career, Melanie spent several years working as a therapist at the Counseling Center at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, where she was active in the development and implementation of several mental health prevention programs. Since moving to Colorado, Melanie has continued her advocacy work for individuals and families afflicted by mental illness.
