Attendees requiring a certificate of completion must sign out with the registrar to receive their certificate before leaving the classroom.
New applicants for a notary commission must complete an approved course of instruction within six months preceding their application, and pass an examination administered by the secretary of state prior to submitting an application for appointment. This is an APPROVED course of instruction. The exam must be taken separately from this course. A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of the course that must be submitted with your notary application submitted to the Secretary of State.

Michael L. Shea

Michael L. Shea, Esq., is a sole practitioner in Centennial, Colorado where his practice focuses on the legal issues facing veterans and their families. Mike is a retired military officer who spent eight years on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps and 20 years with the Colorado Army National Guard. He retired from the National Guard in 2009. Mike's interest in the legal issues of veterans developed as a result of his two deployments to Iraq and observing the problems experienced by soldiers and Marines as a result of their combat experiences. Mike spent 22 years with the Colorado Secretary of State's office with a variety of job titles, including: Director, Business Division; Executive Director, Colorado Central Indexing System; and Director, Licensing and Enforcement Division. He retired in August of 2010. Mike has been a frequent speaker at the National Notary Association, Colorado Bar Association CLE and various professional and government associations on veterans' issues and notary law. In 2010, he was presented the March Fong Eu Achievement Award by the National Notary Association; Mike is a member of the Colorado and Arapahoe County Bar Associations, the Family Law section, the Dispute Resolution section and the Military Law Committee of the Colorado Bar. He is a graduate of the University of Denver. He received his MBA and his Juris Doctorate in 1980.
Brian P. Gryth, Esq.
Colorado Secretary of State, Business Division
Brian P. Gryth, Esq. is a Legislative and Legal Analyst for the Business Division of the Colorado Secretary of State. His duties include interpreting and implementing statutes and legislation, and coordinating the development of online filing transactions. Brian coordinates the Secretary of State's UCC system redesign project and is the Business Division's subject matter specialist on secured transactions filing matters. He is a member of the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations and is the Business Division's liaison to Agricultural and Rural Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Northern Colorado and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Hamline University School of Law.
