As cultural diversity increases in America, developing strong cross-cultural communication skills helps us better communicate with people from other cultures. In the legal profession, it is especially important to understand cultural nuances in order to better represent our clients. This program focuses on unique issues arising from working with people from other cultures in the legal system.

 

Through a better understanding of other cultures, we can better communicate with people from other societies, even if we do not speak their language. Sometimes, even when working with an interpreter, misunderstandings may occur due to cultural biases and preconceptions, or by failing to consider other peoples' experiences with foreign legal systems.  

 

This program will give an overview of Latin American culture and legal systems and the cultural norms that mold communication in those cultures. The program will also cover comparative law.

Stromberg Interpreters/Translators

Sean Dean Stromberg is a federally certified court interpreter and has worked as an interpreter for over thirty years. He has been a staff interpreter at the 20th Judicial District Courts, in Boulder, Colorado for 27 years. Before starting his own Court Interpreting Company in 1986, Stromberg Interpreters/Translators, Sean taught English and Spanish in Mexico, California, and Colorado. Sean continues to teach Spanish and court interpreting skills. Sean has taught court interpreting through the University of Colorado, the University of Denver, and the University of Arizona. Sean is the author of Legal Terminology Dictionary-English/Spanish $2022; Spanish/English: A Bilingual Dictionary for Legal Translation and Court Interpreting, 1st Edition. Sean travels extensively in Mexico and South America for research and study in linguistics. Sean is an avid photographer and cartographer.

He completes cross-border business assignments within and across the U.S., Latin America, and various Asian cultures, combined with interpreting, mediation, and conflict resolution training in the U.S., which strengthens his ability to communicate across differing perspectives and allows him to apply his talent and diplomacy to help people cooperate with each other, finding practical and realistic solutions.

Gianfranco Sotomayor, originally from Mexico City, studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) where he was introduced into the study of the law, philosophy, and ethics. In the United States, he graduated with a dual bachelor degree in Political Science and International affairs, with a minor in Economics, from the University of Colorado Boulder. He has worked for transnational companies like IBM, Intuit, Morgan Stanley and Smith Barney; as well as, governmental offices like the District Attorney's Office and Community Justice Services for the 20th Judicial District. Furthermore, he has extensive experience working in the non-profit field as a strategic aid to several local Colorado non-profit and startups, like Innovastat Inc. He currently works as an Immigration Paralegal at Lisa E. Battan P.C., a boutique law firm in Boulder Colorado, and plans on Attending UT Law in 2019.
