October 2018

Cross-Cultural Communication, Legal Translation, and Court Interpreting

Program PLUS Book

Program Description:
As cultural diversity increases in America, developing strong cross-cultural communication skills helps us better communicate with people from other cultures. In the legal profession, it is especially important to understand cultural nuances in order to better represent our clients. This program focuses on unique issues arising from working with people from other cultures in the legal system.

Through a better understanding of other cultures, we can better communicate with people from other societies, even if we do not speak their language. Sometimes, even when working with an interpreter, misunderstandings may occur due to cultural biases and preconceptions, or by failing to consider other peoples' experiences with foreign legal systems.

This program will give an overview of Latin American culture and legal systems and the cultural norms that mold communication in those cultures. The program will also cover comparative law.

About the Book

Legal Terminology Dictionary-English/Spanish; Spanish/English: A Bilingual Dictionary for Legal Translation and Court Interpreting, 1st Edition

This new comprehensive bilingual legal dictionary is not only written for legal professionals such as court interpreters, legal translators, attorneys, and legal staff, but is also intended for use by all those who need to read or write documents, letters and forms in Spanish, or need to translate from English into Spanish or from Spanish into English. The editor of this dictionary has applied his twenty-seven years of experience as staff interpreter of the Colorado Courts and his extensive experience as a language teacher to create a valuable resource for not only to court interpreters, attorneys, and legal staff, but also business translators, linguists, language teachers, and law students. It is an excellent study resource for those who wish to improve their legal vocabulary in English and Spanish, and is especially useful for those who wish to prepare for court interpreter certification exams.

This bilingual dictionary is a detailed study of the legal terminology used in courtrooms and documents in the U.S.A. and Latin America. And, it is easy to use: the translations of terms are presented in the sequence that is most often used in the legal context in the process of translation and interpretation.

Sean Dean Stromberg has also translated the book: Como entablar un divorcio
en el Estado de Colorado (How to File for Divorce in the State of Colorado).
