Release from Immigration Detention: Bond and Parole - In-Person

Work with a pro-bono client through Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) in the coming year to attend this program for free!

The Issue:
Over 1,200 asylum seekers and long-term U.S. residents are currently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in civil immigration detention in Aurora, Colorado, while they fight their cases to remain safely in the United States. This number will likely increase after President-elect Trump is sworn into office on January 20, 2025.

Trump’s administration and the private prison corporations that contract with ICE to detain noncitizens are planning for mass detention to accompany the planned mass deportation of noncitizens living in the United States.

Why It Matters:
In detention, people are separated from their loved ones, employment, and education. Additionally, movement is restricted while medical and mental health services are very limited. Detention also imposes barriers to accessing counsel and becomes a disincentive to fighting a case.

Detention release allows individuals the ability to better prepare their cases and be together with loved ones during the process.

How You Can Help:
RMIAN seeks pro-bono attorneys to work with clients to achieve freedom from detention – NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

During this training, RMIAN will provide an overview of options for release from immigration detention. You will then learn how to present a bond matter before the Immigration Court and request release from ICE detention. Attendees will further observe a mock bond hearing and panel discussion regarding strategies to address common issues that arise when working with bond and parole clients.

The Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) is a nonprofit organization that provides free immigration legal services to children and to individuals in immigration detention. RMIAN provides daily know-your-rights presentations, individual intakes, pro se assistance, and legal representation for those detained at the federal immigration detention facility in Aurora. RMIAN’s Children’s Program represents children and families who have survived abandonment, abuse, persecution, or other violence, and provides technical assistance and community education throughout the state on children’s immigration law issues. Unable to meet the overwhelming need for legal services, RMIAN refers both detention and children’s clients’ cases to its network of pro bono attorneys. RMIAN screens pro bono cases, writes referral memorandums, and provides professional liability insurance and a mentor attorney for each pro bono attorney.

The Colorado Lawyers Committee is a nonprofit, nonpartisan consortium of over 75 Colorado law firms dedicated to creating and increasing opportunities for children, the poor and other disadvantaged communities through pro bono legal advocacy, negotiation and litigation. In 2023, almost 1,000 volunteers contributed more than 6,500 hours and $3.2 million worth of time to 29 projects and task forces.
