The Annual Advanced Family Law Institute

TOTO: WE'RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE!
Maintenance, Civil Uniforms and Tax Issues in the 21st Century

Sponsored by the Colorado Chapter of the Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers

Program Description:

Colorado lawmakers are debating the implementation of a spousal maintenance formula and recognition of civil unions. This advanced seminar will analyze both the present status of maintenance, based upon Colorado precedent, and the future if a maintenance formula is enacted. Judges will discuss “best practices” when presenting cases before them. Attendees will learn the current options for same-sex partners who wish to dissolve their relationships in states such as Colorado which  do not recognize such relationships. We will be exploring the impacts on Colorado law of proposed legislation to legalize such unions.

The seminar will address the challenges practitioners face in making certain settlement agreements and/or Court orders have the tax consequences intended. Common pitfalls and mistakes will be focused upon, as well as the powers or limitations on the Court to enter Orders in the tax arena.

Attendees will learn of the most recent case law and legislative actions in Colorado. This annual update will be expanded to include guidance from jurisdictions which have enacted maintenance formulas and/or recognize same sex marriages.

The year 2013 will challenge family law attorneys as you have never been challenged before. Join us for this informative and existing look into the issues which will be impacting and changing your practice!
