Who's Knocking at the Gate? Gatekeeping Analysis in the Best Interests of the Children

Program Description:

In the context of divorce and co-parenting, Parental Gatekeeping refers to parental attitudes and actions that are likely to affect the quality of the other parent's relationship with the children, either in a positive or negative way. Gatekeeping is a research-based concept for parenting evaluators to use in addressing the statutory best interest factor in the Colorado statute of support for the other parent-child relationship. The conceptual framework for custody evaluation and courts will be presented. Restrictive and Facilitative Gatekeeping will be contrasted in terms of gate-closing and gate-opening behaviors. Protective Gatekeeping will be demonstrated for cases that involve domestic violence. Alienation will be presented as fact patterns that involve Unjustified Restrictive Gatekeeping. How a gatekeeping analysis can guide the crafting of best interest parenting plans will be discussed.
