Colorado Supreme Court Attorney Regulation Counsel - Practice and Financial Monitor Class

Program Description

In 1999 the Supreme Court substantially revised the attorney regulation process to emphasize education and programs to help lawyers meet their professional obligations. One way was through the adoption of diversion and probation programs that include periods of practice and financial monitoring. The Practice Monitor School is designed to train lawyers to serve as practice monitors and financial monitors in attorney regulation matters - after a disposition has been reached.

In this program you will receive detailed information about the attorney regulation process, including common issues and outcomes. You will learn about the forms of discipline allowed under the rules governing lawyer regulation cases, and different processes for imposing discipline.

You will learn about the role of practice monitors and financial monitors, and the conditions under which they serve. We will explore the ways monitors work with respondent lawyers and the Office of Attorney Regulation and the rules that apply to that the performance of the duties of a monitor.   We will review case studies to see how the rules operate in real life.

You will also learn about common attorney disability issues and the intersection between attorney disability, discipline and monitoring. Representatives of the Colorado Lawyer Assistance Program will discuss things to look for and strategies to use as a monitor when a disability is suspected.
