Program Description:
Special assets officers deal with a variety of credits and workout situations, as well as many different attorneys. The speakers will offer insight into the banker's role in the workout or liquidation of special assets, preferences with regard to use of attorneys and how attorneys can better assist the assigned officer. They will address the life cycle of the special asset and key decision points affecting legal service decisions, as well as the future of special assets work. You will gain perspective on industry expectations of legal counsel that will enable them to improve their service.

Jim Neill leads the seven-member special assets group responsible for managing over $500 million in under-performing and defaulted commercial real estate and C&I loans. He is primarily responsible for maximizing collection return; brainstorming with his team on potential workout solutions; negotiating with borrowers on repayment and/or restructure terms; reviewing and approving workout and OREO proposals; and managing his own portfolio of workout loans. Previously, he was a Manager with Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, where he established its Commercial Servicing department and managed its Special Assets Group.
W. Douglas Stansberry is responsible for managing a portfolio of complex, high-risk credit relationships with a primary focus on commercial real estate and construction. His primary duties include the underwriting and extension of credit, the restructure of existing credit facilities, enforcement of loan covenants, risk forecasting, problem asset reporting, and foreclosure/collection actions as necessary to protect the Bank from further risk. He has created varied hedging structures designed to take advantage of current market conditions that were customized to individual customer needs. This included swap, caps, collars, and more advanced financial products. He has an MBA degree in Finance from the University of Colorado at Denver.
