Program Description
 
The morning segment of our one-day business valuation curriculum will focus on fundamental theory and concepts important to the valuation of closely held businesses. The segment will utilize a team teaching format, using two nationally recognized instructors who will cover the key elements of business valuation, including valuation methods, standards and premise of value, valuation report writing and applicable professional standards. Time will be allotted for questions and answers and also highlight many of the more common mistakes in valuation analysis and reporting.

Particular emphasis will be given to how today's distressed economy is impacting valuation work.  The topics will be taught by a trio of well recognized valuation professionals and allow ample opportunity for questions and answers.

Shari has practiced in the areas of business valuation and litigation consulting since 1988 with both national and local firms prior to becoming a founding member of Harper Lutz Zuber Potenza. Shari's practice covers a wide spectrum of valuation engagements including “business divorce”, financial statement reporting and fair value measurements, wealth transfer, marital dissolution, and litigation where valuation is an issue. Shari has often served as a “joint” valuator in various circumstances including triggering events in buy-sell agreements, and enjoys this role. In her litigation practice Shari has worked on engagements requiring her to estimate lost profits, various type of damages, the value of intangible assets and other business ownership interests and lost earnings. Shari has been qualified as an expert in both State and Federal jurisdictions.
 
Shari is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Denver, where she received her B.S. in Finance and International Business, with honors and has an MBA from the University of Michigan also in Finance and International Business.  She is a founding member of the Women's Estate Planning Council and is Past President and Treasurer of The Alliance Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization funding local scholarships to the DU Women's College, The University of Colorado at Denver and Metro State University and micro credit loans to families in developing countries.  She has authored articles for the Colorado Lawyer as well as Business Valuation Update and has presented for CLE Colorado on both litigation and valuation topics. She has also participated in training for NITA as well as the ABA Trial Advocacy group.

Ron has over 25 years of valuation, economic damages and forensic accounting experience and has been endorsed as an expert witness in several jurisdictions and has served in appointments such as trustee, mediator, arbitrator and Special Master of the Court. Ron is very active nationally as an educator and author of valuation science and has written and taught advanced level valuation and commercial damages courses in several states for the AICPA, NACVA, state bar associations and the Environmental Protection Agency. He is a member of the AICPA governing Council, past chair of the AICPA Accredited in Business Valuation committee and NACVA's Professional Standards Board. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Denver College of Law where he teaches leadership and management for law firms. Ron is the incoming chair of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants on May 1, 2009, and is an author and lead instructor of the Association of Legal Administrator's national Essential Competencies training program for financial management. He is on the editorial boards of several publications and often serves as a technical reviewer of valuation treatises, including the soon to be released Guide to Lost Profits from Business Valuation Resources. Ron holds a BA in Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Management from Michigan State University and an MBA in Accounting and Corporate Policy from the University of Michigan. Ron also continues to focus attention to tax planning and compliance matters, as well as emphasizing succession and exit planning strategies for Seigneur Gustafson clients and their professional advisors.
 
Chris D. Treharne, ASA, MCBA, BVAL

Before founding Gibraltar Business Appraisals, Inc., in 1994, Chris was the vice president of a regional business valuation firm. In addition, he has worked in Fortune 500 firms and as an executive manager in small companies, including having been the CFO of a venture capital financed start-up. He currently provides valuations for federal gift, estate, and income tax purposes as well as stock option, divorce, merger, acquisition, and ESOP needs.
 
Having prepared numerous presentations and authored papers on S corporation valuation issues, Chris is nationally recognized as an expert on the topic.  At the request of the Hon. David Laro of the U.S. Tax Court and Dr. Shannon Pratt, he co-authored a chapter on the topic in their book, Business Valuation and Taxes: Procedure, Law & Perspective. His S corporation valuation model also appears in Financial Valuation Models and Applications Second Edition and Fannon's Guide to the Valuation of Subchapter S Corporations. A white paper he co-authored has been widely distributed by the Treasury Department, and he has co-hosted national teleconferences on the subject, including a private program for IRS business valuation employees.
 
The American Society of Appraisers has designated Chris as an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA), and The Institute of Business Appraisers has awarded him the Master Certified Business Appraiser (MCBA) designation - one of only 34 in the country - and Business Valuator Accredited for Litigation (BVAL) designation.  Additionally, he is a licensed Professional Engineer and real estate broker in Colorado. His academic background includes a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa and an MBA in finance from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
 
In addition to being a faculty member of the American Society of Appraisers and The Institute of Business Appraisers training programs, Chris is a member of ASA's Education Committee, the chair of ASA's Center for Advanced Valuation Studies, and IBA's Northwest Region Governor (seven states and four Canadian provinces).
