Colorado Securities Commissioner Gerald Rome will provide an overview of payment systems using bitcoin and other virtual currencies. Commissioner Rome will discuss both the benefits and risks of purchasing goods and services via virtual currency, including lower transaction fees, greater anonymity, e-wallet thief, and lack of control or backing by a central bank or government.

Meet Your Presenter
 
Gerald Rome became Securities Commissioner on June 2, 2014. In that role, he is responsible for the administration of the Colorado Securities Act, the Colorado Commodity Code, the Colorado Municipal Bond Supervision Act, and the Local Government Investment Pool Trust Fund Administration and Enforcement Act. From 2004 to 2013, Mr. Rome was the Deputy Securities Commissioner for the Colorado Division of Securities. As Deputy Commissioner, he directed the Division's enforcement, licensing and examination activities. Prior to 2004, he served for five years as the Division's chief legal counsel in all its civil enforcement matters as First Assistant Attorney General for the Colorado Attorney General's office. In addition to his works as a securities regulator, Mr. Rome served as Senior Attorney for the Resolution Trust Corporation/FDIC, where he directed the Civil Fraud Task Force for the Denver office. Mr. Rome has also worked for 6 years as a criminal prosecutor, including two years of prosecuting securities law violations investigated by the Colorado Division of Securities. Mr. Rome received his J.D. degree from the University of Denver School of Law, and his B.A. degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
