Colorado’s River Basins: A Comprehensive Update
PLUS Updates - Arkansas, Rio Grande, Gunnison, South Platte and Republican River Basin

This is the 6th course of the Geographical Divisions Program Series
A Series of Courses Sponsored by the Colorado Supreme Court and the Colorado Bar Association

On August 1, 2008, the Water Court Committee of the Colorado Supreme Court presented its report to the Chief Justice, the Governor, and the Colorado General Assembly. Among its recommendations, the Committee called for a comprehensive ongoing educational program for attorneys, expert witnesses, judges, referees, water clerks, and other professionals who plan to participate in water court proceedings. The purpose of this educational program is to elevate the quality of water court practice and to promote timely, fair and effective resolution of water court cases.

Hence, a training program has been developed and organized into three disciplines of study, each with its own series of courses as follows. Each course is designed as a stand-alone course.  You may choose to attend one, two, three or more, up to all of the courses.

The Water Law and Administration Program Series
The Technical and Engineering Program Series
The Geographical Divisions Program Series

Program Description

This is the sixth in  a series of courses related to Colorado's major river basins. It will provide insights on basins in 6 of Colorado's 7 water divisions. And, it has been designed for all professionals, including attorneys, engineers, expert witnesses, and water resources managers, who work in the area of water rights and participate in water court proceedings.  Hear from the Division 6 engineer on the principal geographic and hydrologic features of the Yampa River Basin along with administration issues and Basin hot topics, such as water users and endangered fish. Get updated on the Arkansas, Rio Grande, Gunnison, South Platte and Republican River Basins on currently important issues and hot topics, which have developed since the previous training courses concerning these Basins. Topics include water administration related to marijuana cultivation, alternative transfer methods, surface water irrigation improvement rules implementation, water rights versus property rights in storm water management, new/proposed groundwater rules, the Breem Ditch change case, retabulation of the City of Ouray's water rights, hydropower on Uncompahgre Valley irrigation canals, high groundwater tables, Republican River Basin compliance efforts, and resolution of the latest round of Kansas v.
