Note from the Author:

The year 2012 is a year of water celebration throughout Colorado. It's the 10th Anniversary of the Colorado General Assembly's creation of the Colorado Foundation for Water Education. It's also the 75th Anniversary of the Colorado Water Conservation Board, the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, and the Colorado River Water Conservation District.

When I was a member of the Colorado Attorney General's Office, the CWCB was one of my clients. The Northern District was my client for 17 years thereafter. In both of those representations, I frequently interacted with the Colorado River District and the Denver Water Department as an advocate and a negotiator. As a member of the Colorado Supreme Court, I participate with my six colleagues in water law decisionmaking. As the publications chair for our state's water education foundation, I help shepherd the look, feel and content of the Headwaters magazines and the Citizen's Guide series.

I like writing, reading the writing of others, and traveling through the imaginative landscape of this great country with family, friends, maps and guides we meet along the way. The heart of this little book embraces a series of travel adventures with my wife Bobbie, starting with our Peace Corps service in Colombia in the mid-sixties and extending through my travels with grandson K.J. to grand places of our country's legacy and future. The poems and prose poems are way markers and cairns.

I am finding many occasions and many persons to celebrate, for character, virtue, fortitude, insight, fun, reflection, contemplation, and instruction. Great teachers, including Father Don Sutton and poet Kathryn Winograd, continue to inspire the life lines present in these pages.

I am led southwesterly by the best of guides. They include Kristin Kuckelman of Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, Rickey Hayes of the Ute Mountain Tribe, Michael Welsh of the University of Northern Colorado, Ken and Ruth Wright of the Wright Paleohydrological Institute, and Kate Thompson, who I met on the river when I was fishing with brother Will. Kate's stunning cover photograph of lower Glen Canyon bending to Marble Canyon calls on all that's Grand. To our journeying grandchildren, Joni, K.J., Shannon, Ella, Quinn and Grace, may you enjoy the glow of your very many glimmerings.
