The Use of Psychotropic Medications and Their Impact on Functioning

Program Description

The Care and Treatment of Persons with Mental Illness Act allows petitioners to hold persons suffering from a mental illness resulting in dangerousness or grave disability for up to 6 months without a court order. However, section 27-65-111, C.R.S., requires that a treating physician motion the court for authority to administer psychiatric medication involuntarily for therapeutic treatment, and the court must find by clear and convincing evidence each of the four elements required by People v. Medina to order the involuntary treatment. The Medina elements include discussing the benefits, side effects, and lack of viable alternatives to the proposed medications. Dr. Jeffrey Gold will review the pathophysiology of select psychiatric disorders and the psychotropic agents used to treat them. We will discuss in practical detail the utility of such medications, their implications on functioning, and potential side-effects.
