Program Description:
For lawyers, everything’s changed since the ‘Great Recession’ of 2008. It’s now a ‘buyer’s market’ for legal services. “In-house” corporate General Counsel (“GCs”) are referring fewer and fewer legal matters to outside law firms. Consumers and small businesses are going to LegalZoom® in lieu of lawyers and law firms. Increasingly, clients now demand that their outside law firms abandon the entrenched, historic, ‘cost-plus,’ ‘billable hour’ billing model in favor of ‘Alternative Fee Arrangements’ (“AFAs”), which have shifted the ‘risk of loss’ of poor ‘case management’ to outside law firms. Law firms now realize that the profitable use of AFAs requires managing legal matters like the projects they really are, and recent surveys of GCs repeatedly show that the emerging discipline of Legal Project Management and its benefits are now one of the main things that GCs look for in hiring outside law firms. Thus, since about 2009 the new field of LEGAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT was born – emerging as the fastest growing interdisciplinary movement in the practice of law in this decade. Business and consumer lawyers alike who fail to embrace LEGAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT will be at a pronounced disadvantage in the changing legal marketplace of the 21st Century, where clients demand greater efficiency and economy in legal services.
