As cultural diversity increases in America, developing strong cross-cultural communication skills helps us better communicate with people from other cultures. In the legal profession, it is especially important to understand cultural nuances in order to better represent our clients. This program focuses on unique issues arising from working with people from other cultures in the legal system.
Through a better understanding of other cultures, we can better communicate with people from other societies, even if we do not speak their language. Sometimes, even when working with an interpreter, misunderstandings may occur due to cultural biases and preconceptions, or by failing to consider other peoples’ experiences with foreign legal systems.
This program will give an overview of Latin American culture and legal systems and the cultural norms that mold communication in those cultures. The program will also cover comparative law.
