- Determining whether there is an appealable order
- Computation of deadlines for appealing
- Identifying tentative issues and whether they were adequately preserved in the trial court proceedings
- Weighing the likelihood of success on those issues and their legal merit
- Consideration of costs, including a transcript, amount of time to brief the case, and preparation for oral argument
- Discussing with the client what the client wants to get out of the appeal (and whether an appeal has potential to achieve that goal).
