Program Description

You are cordially invited to join us on June 9, 2011, for a fireside chat and luncheon with former Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey, a Colorado Legal Legend, who will share with us her ethical and professional words of wisdom and her personal and practical advice that have delivered her to her admired position as one of Colorado's leading legal minds.  This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear her speak from the heart and leave you with thoughts and words to live by to enhance your professional and personal life.

Honored Speaker:

Mary Mullarkey was appointed to the seven-member Colorado Supreme Court in 1987 by Governor Roy Romer. In 1998, she was selected by her fellow justices to serve as Chief Justice. She has received several distinguished honors and awards including the 2010 Herbert Harley Award from the American Judicature Society, the 2003 Judicial Excellence award from the Denver Bar Association and the 2002 Mary Lathrop award from the Colorado Women's Bar Association.  In 2010, she was chosen as a Woman Who Makes a Difference by the International Women's Forum, and the Colorado Judicial Institute recognized her for Distinguished Judicial Leadership.
During the twenty-three and a half years she served on the Colorado Supreme Court, she wrote 472 opinions, including 382 majority opinions for the Court and 90 concurring or dissenting opinions.  One of her accomplishments as Chief Justice was the legislative authorization of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center, now under construction and scheduled for completion in Spring 2013.
Prior to her appointment to the bench, she practiced law for 19 years in a variety of settings. After graduating from Harvard Law in 1968, she went to Washington, DC to work for the Interior Department. In 1973, she and her husband moved to Denver where she joined the newly opened Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. From 1975 to 1982, she specialized in appellate practice, first while heading the Appellate Section in the Colorado Attorney General's Office and then while serving as Colorado's Solicitor General. She has also served as the legal adviser to Governor Richard D. Lamm, held legal positions with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Department of the Interior, and engaged in the private practice of law.
Seven years into her term, Justice Mullarkey was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Even though she battles the disease daily, it did not interrupt her demanding career and does not interrupt her life.  According to her colleagues, Justice Mullarkey showed enormous concern for the judicial system in many arenas. She worked to make the system as responsive and responsible as possible, and was very concerned about the quality of justice delivered by the state's courts.
Being one of the first women on an all-man panel presented challenges. Nevertheless, her fellow justices recognized her diligence, fairness and attentiveness, and in 1998, they selected her as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Colorado. Challenges have never hindered her life, and she tackles every challenge and opportunity with a positive attitude.  She is truly a Colorado Legal Legend.
The Former Chief Justice will be joined by Melissa Hart.
Melissa Hart joined the University of Colorado Law School as a visitor in 2000 and accepted a tenure-track position in 2001. A 1995 graduate of Harvard Law School, she clerked for Judge Guido Calabresi of the Second Circuit and for Justice John Paul Stevens on the United States Supreme Court. Professor Hart practiced law for several years in Washington, D.C., including as a Trial Attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice. She teaches Employment Discrimination, Legal Ethics and Professionalism, Civil Procedure and Supreme Court Decision-making. Her scholarship focuses primarily on employment discrimination. In particular, she writes about large class action law suits challenging structural discrimination in the workplace. Her recent work has focused on the nationwide sex discrimination lawsuit against Wal-Mart and the potential for attacking the “glass ceiling” through litigation and through employer-initiated compliance efforts. Professor Hart was the president of the American Association of Law Schools Section on Employment Discrimination in 2008. She is on the editorial board of the peer-reviewed Employee Rights and Employment Policy Journal and is a member of the Labor Law Group.
Professor Hart remains active in the legal community, serving on the Colorado Supreme Court's Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee and Board of Continuing Judicial and Legal Education. She has authored several amicus briefs in employment discrimination cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and in 2008 represented a group of Colorado citizens pro bono in an election law dispute that resulted in a win at the Colorado Supreme Court
