A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Disciplinary Hearing & Legal Ethics is No Laughing Matter

Program Description:

Increasingly, lawyer civility and congeniality is becoming a thing of the past. Yet, it doesn't have to be that way. Civil litigation need not lead to all-out civil war. As legal professionals, lawyers have an obligation to act just that way - professionally. In this humorous presentation, veteran attorney and legal humorist Sean Carter will remind you that zealous advocacy does not require you to be a zealot.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Disciplinary Hearing
It's possible to be courteous, kind, accommodating and effective. In fact, for the continued well-being of the profession (and yourself), it's necessary. In particular, Mr. Carter will discuss practical ways to:

- Reduce the hostility in interactions with even the most difficult opposing counsel
- Increase camaraderie among colleagues
- Diffuse tensions among warring clients
- Secure accommodations from opposing counsel
- Structure more mutually beneficial arrangements with clients
- Preserve the integrity of the profession
- Always maintain proper decorum before the court
- Assist in providing pro bono legal services
- Serve the bar and the legal profession
- Provide service to the community at large

A man who died was supposed to go to Heaven, but ended up in Hell. So, God called Satan, protesting to have that man returned to Heaven where he belonged. When Satan rejected the request, God said he would go to court to get the man back, to which Satan replied, “Where are you going to get a lawyer? They are all down here!”

The above joke is one of just thousands of lawyer jokes told each day. In fact, bashing lawyers is quickly becoming America's favorite pastime. But why? Is it because the typical layperson is jealous of our intellects, incomes and good looks? Mr. Carter suggests that while this may be true in his case, there may be other factors at work as well. In this presentation, Mr. Carter explores the topic of lawyer jokes, whether they have any basis in fact and what they say about our adherence to the rules of professional conduct.
