The Ten Commandments for Avoiding Ethical Problems as a Lawyer & Lawghter is the Best Medicine  AND A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Disciplinary Hearing & Legal Ethics is No Laughing Matter

Program Description:

Sean Carter introduces a new form of CLE-comedic legal education. It is often said that laughter is the best medicine, and Sean Carter combines a healthy dose of substantive legal knowledge and side-splitting humor to create his own special potion of “lawghter.” In his seminars, you will learn how to avoid the most common ethical pitfalls faced by lawyers and how to alleviate the stress of practicing law. You will also be treated to engaging updates on the most significant legal developments. And, perhaps, most important, you will have a great time in the process.

Lawyer turned humorist Sean Carter will take a light-hearted look at the practice law and how attorneys can prevent disciplinary problems, avoid stress, remain civil, and stay sober.

The Ten Commandments for Avoiding Ethical Problems as a Lawyer

Far too often, legal ethics seminars are filled with convoluted hypos that demonstrate conflicts of interests and ethical dilemmas that will never occur in a world that has, say, gravity, centrifugal force or Oprah Winfrey. Yet, the truth of the matter is that legal ethics really isn't that complicated. There are very basic things that lawyers must do (and not do) to avoid disciplinary problems. In this presentation, Mr. Carter delivers a “sermon” on the Ten Commandments of avoiding ethical problems.

l. Thou Shalt Not Kill
ll. Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness
lll. Thou Shalt Not Steal
lV. Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery
V. Thou Shalt Not Discriminate
Vl. Thou Shalt Not Gossip
Vll. Thou Shalt Know Thy Stuff
Vlll. Thou Shalt Just Do It
lX. Thou Shalt Call Thy Client Backeth
X. Thou Shalt Not Lose Thy Mind

Lawghter is the Best Medicine

Substance abuse is a huge problem in the legal profession. Lawyers suffer among the highest rates of alcoholism and the highest rates of drug addiction.

In this presentation, Mr. Carter uses humor to help lawyers to:

- Identify the classic warning signs of substance abuse
- Help colleagues get the help they need
- Avoid much of the stress from which the problem often starts

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Disciplinary Hearing

It's possible to be courteous, kind, accommodating and effective. In fact, for the continued well-being of the profession (and yourself), it's necessary. In particular, Mr. Carter will discuss practical ways to:

- Reduce the hostility in interactions with even the most difficult opposing counsel
- Increase camaraderie among colleagues
- Diffuse tensions among warring clients
- Secure accommodations from opposing counsel
- Structure more mutually beneficial arrangements with clients
- Preserve the integrity of the profession
- Always maintain proper decorum before the court
- Assist in providing pro bono legal services
- Serve the bar and the legal profession
- Provide service to the community at large

Legal Ethics is No Laughing Matter

A man who died was supposed to go to Heaven, but ended up in Hell. So, God called Satan, protesting to have that man returned to Heaven where he belonged. When Satan rejected the request, God said he would go to court to get the man back, to which Satan replied, “Where are you going to get a lawyer? They are all down here!”

The above joke is one of just thousands of lawyer jokes told each day. In fact, bashing lawyers is quickly becoming America's favorite pastime. But why? Is it because the typical layperson is jealous of our intellects, incomes and good looks? Mr. Carter suggests that while this may be true in his case, there may be other factors at work as well. In this presentation, Mr. Carter explores the topic of lawyer jokes, whether they have any basis in fact and what they say about our adherence to the rules of professional conduct.
