501(c)(6) Business Leagues and Professional Associations – What Are They and Why Do They Matter?
The Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(6) designation includes membership-based organizations that promote the business interests of their members, such as professional and trade associations and chambers of commerce. Although less well known than 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, 501(c)(6) organizations (or as the IRS prefers, “business leagues”) play a major role in the tax-exempt landscape. Almost every trade or profession has a membership organization, and almost every municipality has a chamber of commerce.  Despite many similarities, business leagues are very different from 501(c)(3) organizations and face unique legal issues, including tax, anti-trust, advocacy activities, and member discipline.
