Nathan B. Coats

Colorado Supreme Court
Honorable Nathan B. Coats has been sitting as a justice on the state supreme court since May of 2000. For the preceding twenty or so years, he had served as the deputy in charge of the state attorney general's appellate section and as the chief appellate deputy of the Denver District Attorney's Office.  During that time, he practiced regularly in the state and federal appellate courts, and served on the Colorado Supreme Court's Appellate Rules Committee.  Because both positions also involved the supervision of a number of government attorneys, he was regularly involved in drafting or teaching and consulting with other attorneys about the strategy and technique of petitions for discretionary review.  He has periodically appeared as a presenter in other continuing legal education programs on appellate practice, for the government, the bar association, and the appellate courts.
