David A. Bottger

Honorable Chief Judge David Bottger was born January 27, 1951, in Painesville, Ohio. He holds a B.A. in economics from Ohio Northern University (1973) and a J.D. from Notre Dame Law School (1976).  He clerked for Justice Robert B. Lee of the Colorado Supreme Court from 1976-1977.  He served as a magistrate for the 21st Judicial District from 1983-1987, and Colorado's Governor appointed him to the position of a district court judge for the 21st Judicial District in 1987.  He has been the Chief Judge for the 21st Judicial District since 2005.  He has been actively been involved in the Mesa County National Institute of Corrections technical assistance grant, and has implemented a "pilot courtroom", in the 21st Judicial District.  This pilot courtroom is dedicated to using Evidence Based Practices, including motivational interviewing techniques, risk needs assessments, smarter sentencing goals, and other practices.  All lawyers appearing in his courtroom are encouraged to be prepared to address and argue from an Evidence Based knowledge base.
