James H. Chalat
Chalat Hatten & Banker PCJim Chalat, Esq., received his License to Practice Law in Colorado in 1977. For more than 40 years he has been a trial lawyer specializing in plaintiffs' personal injury and wrongful death cases. Jim is in active practice with extensive experience in personal injury and wrongful death cases. Jim has represented individuals from all walks of life. They have included: the catastrophically injured four-year old son of Hispanic-American farm laborers; a star Broadway performer; skilled laborers and union tradesmen; professional and Olympic athletes; urban office workers; physicians and lawyers; disabled individuals overcoming blindness, deafness and mobility impairments; professional airline pilots, and elite business people. Each of these people have special needs and unique issues relating to their lives: accommodations and appliances; complex claims of income loss and forward-looking life care and future needs; personal stories relating to their impairments and how those impairments will affect their lives, their loved ones and their dreams. On the financial side, Jim Chalat has advised clients on structured settlements, Medicare set-aside, complex subrogation and reimbursement issues, life-care planning, family distributions, multi-party actions and settlements. The more complex cases also involve multiple defendants and insurers. Additionally, Mr. Chalat has managed cases in which there are parallel workers' compensation claims and contested proceedings. These experiences, and successes have led Mr. Chalat to be one of the most highly credentialed plaintiffs' personal injury attorneys in Colorado. For over 30 years he has been recognized as a Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He was named by Best Lawyers as Lawyer of the Year in 2017 for Professional Malpractice Law for Plaintiff. He was selected to the American Board of Trial Advocacy (ABOTA). Since 2015, Denver's premier magazine, 5280, has named him as one of five "Top Denver Lawyers" in the personal injury category. In 2017 he was named "Barrister's Best" in Plaintiff's personal injury by Colorado Law Week, and in 2018 the same publication named Jim Chalat as the "People's Choice," again in plaintiff's personal injury. He is a sustaining member of the American Association for Justice and of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, and a long-time member of the Denver, Colorado, and American Bar Associations. Mr. Chalat is an active member of the community investing time in pro bono case work, law school lectures and young lawyer mentoring. Jim has also volunteered for the Colorado State Bar Association's high school mock trial program and was active for over 20 years in the Inns of Court in Denver, an organization focused on legal ethics and professionalism.
