Denver Juvenile CourtDeborah Garcia Sandoval has spent since July 1, 1991 working with and supervising high risk youth through Denver's Juvenile Probation Department. Since 2021, Deborah has been on special assignment as coordinator for Denver's Handgun Intervention Program ('HIP'). This program is designed to reduce future gun violence with youth through early intervention and to promote safe communities, engaging the youth in 6 weeks of intensive programming to help guide them through a culturally diverse educational model which encourages the youth to embrace a restorative justice mindset. The cohorts culminate in a final presentation and celebration of the youths and their goals and educational outcomes. Prior to 2021, Deborah spent 10 years on special assignment to the City of Denver under the umbrella of GRID (Gang Reduction Initiative of Denver), currently the Office of Community Violence Solutions (OCVS). She was selected to be the prevention Coordinator/Probation Officer and facilitated the Gang Resistance Education and Training Program ('G.R.E.A.T.'). Deborah has spent her career with a restorative justice and community engagement lens to help reduce youth violence and has planned and organized many community events such as Safe Summer Kick Off, National Night Out, and has volunteered for the police department community events. Deborah has collaborated in a pilot project which includes violence and online safety with National 'G.R.E.A.T.' and the Department of Homeland Security. Deborah is passionate about her work with youth and the community and looks forward to continuing positive outcomes for these youth, their families, and her community.
