Douglas J. Becker, Esq., practices law as a solo attorney at Becker PC, a Colorado professional corporation in Denver, Colorado. He previously was the senior tax attorney with the Denver law firms of Otten, Johnson, Robinson, Neff & Ragonetti, P.C. and Fairfield and Woods, P.C. He practices tax, corporate, and general business law. His tax practice covers a broad range of areas, including providing tax advice and tax planning in (i) all aspects of real estate, including real estate joint ventures, capital gains planning, land banking (i.e., Bramblett transactions), like-kind exchanges, and involuntary conversions, and (ii) corporation and partnership matters, including mergers and acquisitions, purchases and sales of businesses, partner-partnership transactions, and partnership and operating agreements. Mr. Becker has been providing representation with respect to like-kind exchanges since he joined the Bar in 1989. He formed and represented the first Qualified Intermediary company in the State of Colorado and prepared the first set of like-kind exchange documents under the 1991 deferred exchange Treasury Regulations, which exchange documents enjoyed wide use in the State for many years. Mr. Becker was awarded the James E. Bye Lifetime Achievement Award by the Colorado Bar Association Tax Section in 2020. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel in 2018. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America - Tax , 2020 Chambers - Tax, and as US News Tier 1 Best Law Firm - Tax. He is regularly recognized as a Colorado SuperLawyer and as a 5280 Magazine Colorado Top Lawyer. Mr. Becker is an adjunct professor at the University of Denver Graduate Tax Program (currently teaching Partnership Taxation and Taxation of S Corporations, and previously taught Taxation of Property Transactions) and the University of Denver Sturm College of Law (previously taught Accounting for Lawyers). In addition, he lectures on various tax topics at continuing legal education (CLE) and continuing professional education (CPE) seminars. Mr. Becker is a former Chairman of the Tax Section of the Colorado Bar Association and continues to serve on the Executive Council. Mr. Becker received his law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1989 and his LL.M. in Taxation degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 1993. He is also a licensed (but non-practicing) Certified Public Accountant in the State of Colorado, and previously practiced accounting in Denver with the firm of Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte).
