Joel G. Hassell
Clear Creek LawJoel G. Hassell, JD, LLM, is an attorney, engineering executive, entrepreneur, and two-time Emmy®-winning technologist who has spent more than four decades at the intersection of law, technology, and business leadership. He is the founder of Clear Creek Law, PC in Golden, Colorado, where he advises individuals, families, and closely held businesses in estate planning, business law, and real estate, drawing on a career that began not in a law library, but in engineering labs and boardrooms. Before returning to full-time legal practice, Joel served as Chief Executive Officer of Canoe Ventures, a national advanced advertising technology company serving major cable operators and media companies. He previously founded multiple technology companies, served as CTO and General Counsel, held senior executive roles with global interactive television providers, and led companies through acquisitions. He is a named inventor on numerous U.S. patents in interactive television, program guide systems, and content insertion technologies, and is a recipient of two Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards. Joel earned his J.D. from the University of Denver and an LL.M. in Wealth Management from Texas A&M University. He currently serves on the Colorado Bar Association's AI & Innovation Task Force and the CBA-CLE Orange Book Forms Committee and chairs its Plain English Subcommittee. When speaking about artificial intelligence in legal practice, Joel draws from lived experience building large-scale technology platforms, negotiating complex commercial systems, and now advising lawyers on ethical deployment of emerging tools. He occasionally jokes that after helping build interactive television and auctioning systems for digital advertising, teaching lawyers how to use AI responsibly feels comparatively straightforward.
