Gilbert M. Román

Gilbert M. Román is the Chief Judge of the Colorado Court of Appeals and has served on the Colorado Court of Appeals since August 1, 2005. In this capacity, he chairs the Rules of Appellate Procedure Committee. Within the judicial branch, Chief Judge Román chairs the Statewide Training and Development Committee and the Statewide Leadership Training Advisory Committee. He also serves on the judicial branches' Workplace Culture Initiative Steering Committee, Colorado Chief Judge Council, Colorado Institute for Faculty Excellence - Judicial Education, Judicial Well-Being Committee, Court Services Committee, HR Compensation Subcommittee, Colorado Judicial Conference Planning Committee. Nationally, Chief Judge Román serves on the Executive Committee, Conference Planning, and Education Committee of the Council of Chief Judges of State Courts of Appeal. Chief Judge Román serves as a faculty member of the National Judicial College and was the first recipient of the NJC's Certificate in Judicial Development - Appellate Judicial Skills.
 
Before his judicial service, Chief Judge Román was a partner at the Denver law firm Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons LLP (now known as Lewis Roca). He also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and as an arbitrator and mediator for the American Arbitration Association. Judge Román is a former board member of the Denver Bar Association and Hispanic National and Colorado Bar Associations. He is a recipient of the Richard Marden Davis Service Award presented by the Denver Bar Foundation; the Outstanding Young Lawyer Award presented by the Denver Bar Association; and the Outstanding Lawyer Award presented by the Hispanic National Bar Association. He is a recipient of the Harvard Law School and National Judicial College Judicial Executive Leadership Certificate and also a Creative Writing Certificate from Emory University. Chief Judge Román received his undergraduate degree from Colorado State University and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.
