Stephen L. Cohen is a partner in the Securities & Derivatives Enforcement and Regulatory practice in Sidley Austin's Washington, D.C. office. Stephen advises clients on a broad range of government and internal investigations, enforcement-related litigation, whistleblower complaints, regulatory and compliance issues and congressional matters. Recently, he has also been assisting clients with cyber breaches and other crisis management issues. He was presented with the 2017 International Compliance & Ethics award from the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, recognizing him for his significant contributions to the compliance and ethics profession. Stephen joined Sidley last year after over a decade of experience at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), having most recently served as associate director in the agency's enforcement division where he earned the Distinguished Service Award, the agency's highest honor. In that role, he oversaw domestic and international enforcement activities involving accounting and disclosure fraud, auditor misconduct, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, insider trading, registered and unregistered securities offerings, market abuses, broker-dealers, investment advisors and other regulated entities. He also served as Senior Advisor to SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro, in private practice and as a trial attorney in the US Department of Justice through the Attorney General's Honors Program.
