Aurora Police DepartmentVanessa Wilson joined the Aurora Police Department in 1996. She worked as a Patrol Officer until she was selected to be a Police Recruiter in 2001. In 2003, she was promoted to the rank of Agent and was assigned as a Detective to the Major Investigations Bureau, Crimes Against Children Unit. In 2006, she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. As a Sergeant, she supervised a patrol team, the Property and Evidence Unit, the District 3 Investigations Unit, and the Intelligence Unit. Wilson promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2009, where she served as a Watch Commander in District One, Commander of the Field Training Program and Recruitment Unit, and the Internal Affairs Section, where she held a dual role as the Police Emergency Services coordinator. In January 2014 she was promoted to the rank of Captain where she served as the Executive Officer of the Investigations Bureau. In August of that year she was appointed to be the Acting Commander of District 2 where she served until her promotion to Division Chief. She is the first female in the history of the department to have earned that rank.
