Jason S. Angell is a trial lawyer and is Of Counsel in the Intellectual Property practice group at Hopkins & Carley in Palo Alto, California.  After nearly ten years in the Intellectual Property group at a major international law firm, Jason left to help found a boutique litigation firm focused on patent enforcement and defense, antitrust litigation and counseling, and other complex matters for domestic and international technology companies.  Until May 2018, Jason was a name partner at Freitas Angell & Weinberg LLP in Redwood City, California.  Jason regularly publishes and speaks on matters of patent law and antitrust law. In his intellectual property practice, Jason represents both plaintiffs and defendants in patent infringement actions, and in validity proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.  Jason has led patent litigation teams on a variety of technologies, including wireless communications, semiconductor design and manufacturing, and audio and video encoding and decoding, among others. Jason has also served as lead counsel in numerous inter partes review proceedings.  Jason has been successful in defeating validity challenges both at the institution stage, and at Final Written Decision. Jason is a member of the Patent Bar.  In 2013, Jason served as trial counsel in a federal price fixing trial in San Francisco for a defendant that had pleaded guilty to criminal price fixing.  The plaintiffs sought damages exceeding $700,000,000.  Over the course of the six-week jury trial, Jason developed and executed various aspects of trial strategy.  The jury returned a verdict of less than 1% of the damages claimed.  Jason is a member of the Intellectual Property Law Committee of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation. Jason actively participates in the Patent Litigation Committee, and serves as the co-chair of the subcommittee on developments under 35 U.S.C. §§ 102, 103. His work on the Patent Litigation Committee has also included serving on various task forces charged with drafting recommendations to the ABA for policy positions on developing issues in patent law. Jason is also a member of the ABA Section on Antitrust Law. He is a Co-Editor of the ABA text “Proof of Conspiracy Under Federal Antitrust Laws,” and has been a contributor to Antitrust Law Developments, Seventh Edition and Eighth Edition.
