Bob . Barret

Bob Barret, PhD, is professor emeritus in counseling from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte and a psychologist in private practice.  Over the course of his career he has co-authored or co-edited four books and over twenty research articles related to counseling issues.  He has also been an activist in the LGBT community regionally and nationally, and played a key role in the development of doctoral studies in multicultural counseling at UNC Charlotte. His clinical practice focuses on issues of grief and loss (especially parents who have had a child die), couple counseling, adjustment to and management of chronic illness such as cancer and HIV, and issues of LGBT identity development.  On his retirement university colleagues, former students, and friends endowed the Bob Barret Distinguished Lecture Series in Multicultural Counseling and the annual Bob Barret Adard for Distinction in Multicultural Understanding.  In his retirement he continues to be active in the practice of psychotherapy and to explore the world through various adventures.  Most recently, he and Paula Kohut have done several presentations to various groups of attorneys on LGBT issues in estate planning.
