S. Allan Adelman, Esq., has been engaged exclusively in the practice of hospital and healthcare law, including the defense of medical malpractice cases, for over 40 years. He serves as general counsel to several acute care general hospitals in Maryland and as special counsel for medical staff, credentialing, peer review and hospital-physician issues for numerous other hospitals across the country. His professional activities focus on the myriad problems hospitals face on a daily basis including hospital-physician relationships, medical staffs bylaws and governance, credentialing, peer review and related hearings, corporate organization and governance, corporate compliance, patient care and consent issues, risk management and liability issues, fraud and abuse and Stark issues, HIPAA matters, tax exemption issues including intermediate sanctions and private inurement, corporate compliance, regulatory matters such as investigations by licensing or regulatory authorities, and medical malpractice defense. Al is nationally recognized as a leader in healthcare law and has made numerous presentations to hospital governing bodies, medical staffs and at national conferences. From 1995 to 1997 he was chair of the Credentialing and Peer Review Practice Group of the American Health Lawyers Association. He became a member of the AHLA Board of Directors in 1997 and a member of the Board Executive Committee in 1999. In 2005 Al was elected as President of the American Health Lawyers Association.
