Stephen J. Schapanski

Honorable Chief Judge Stephen J. Schapanski practiced law in Fort Collins from 1974 to 1993, with an emphasis in family and juvenile law.  He was appointed as a District Court Magistrate in Larimer County in 1993 and sat primarily in a domestic relations docket for fourteen years.  He was appointed as a District Court Judge in the 8th judicial district (Larimer and Jackson counties) in 2007 by Governor Bill Ritter.  He was appointed as Chief Judge in the 8th judicial district in 2009 by Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey.  He is currently the chairperson of the Supreme Court Standing Committee on Family Issues.  He has previously served on the Court Improvement Committee and the Office of Dispute Resolution Advisory Committee.  He received the Colorado Judicial Institute Judicial Excellence Award in 2005.  He has been a speaker at many continuing legal education programs.
