Office of the Colorado Attorney GeneralRobert S. Shapiro, Esq., is currently the First Assistant Attorney General for Special Prosecutions in the Colorado Attorney General's Office. He started his career at the Attorney General's Office in November 2007 after serving for over 11 years as a Prosecutor in the Boulder County (Colorado) District Attorney's Office, including serving as a Chief Deputy District Attorney. Prior to his years in Boulder, Mr. Shapiro served as a Deputy District Attorney in the Mesa County District Attorney's Office in Grand Junction, Colorado. Additionally, before Mr. Shapiro became a Prosecutor he served 4 years on active duty as a United States Army Intelligence Officer with assignments in the Republic of Panama, Europe and at different locations in the United States. As the First Assistant Attorney General for Special Prosecutions Mr. Shapiro supervises and leads a team of prosecutors, investigators and support staff. The majority of case assignments for the Special Prosecutions Unit centers on matters that are multi-jurisdictional, complex crimes. The unit has also placed a strong emphasis on analyzing these complex cases to determine whether the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA) is a viable charging option. Mr. Shapiro also serves as the primary legal advisor to the Statewide Grand Jury as it is charged with the responsibility of investigating and charging these types of cases. During the past few years Mr. Shapiro's unit has been assigned to investigate gang cases, trans-national drug distribution operations, illegal marijuana cultivation and distribution matters, various fraud and theft cases (including mortgage and bank fraud schemes) auto theft cases, election and tax fraud, corruption matters, environmental crimes and burglary/ID theft rings. Furthermore, Mr. Shapiro's unit also works with rural jurisdictions to prosecute homicide cases when requested by the local elected District Attorney. Mr. Shapiro is a 1989 graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder and a 1995 graduate of California Western School of Law in San Diego.
