Robert Shapiro, Esq., is currently the First Assistant Attorney General for Special Prosecutions in the Colorado Attorney General's Office.  He started his career at the Attorney General's Office in November 2007 after working for over 11 ½ years as a Prosecutor in the Boulder County (Colorado) District Attorney's Office, including serving as a Chief Deputy District Attorney.  Prior to his years in Boulder, Mr. Shapiro served as a Deputy District Attorney in the Mesa County District Attorney's Office in Grand Junction, Colorado.  Additionally, before Mr. Shapiro became a Prosecutor he served 4 years on active duty as a United States Army Intelligence Officer with assignments in the Republic of Panama, Europe and throughout the United States. As the First Assistant Attorney General for Special Prosecutions Mr. Shapiro supervises and leads a staff of 7 Prosecutors, 4 Criminal Investigators and 1 Paralegal.  The majority of case assignments for the Special Prosecutions Unit focus on matters that are multi-jurisdictional, complex crimes.  The unit has also placed a strong emphasis on analyzing these complex cases to determine whether the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA) is a viable charging option.   Mr. Shapiro's unit also heavily relies on working with the Statewide Grand Jury to investigate and charge these significant cases.  Mr. Shapiro is also the Attorney General's Grand Jury legal coordinator for the Statewide Grand Jury.   Historically Mr. Shapiro's unit has been assigned to investigate and prosecute gang cases, drug distribution and trafficking organizations, gambling enterprises, human trafficking and child sexual exploitation cases, mortgage and bank fraud schemes, auto theft cases, and burglary rings. Furthermore, Mr. Shapiro's unit also prosecutes homicide cases, complex state tax evasion cases, environmental crimes, election frauds and any other designated matter pursuant to an Executive Order issued by the Governor. Mr. Shapiro is a 1989 graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder and a 1995 graduate of California Western School of Law in San Diego.
