Jay W. Swearingen
The Animal Law Center LLCJay W. Swearingen, Esq. graduated from DU Law School in 1972. His early career was as counsel for the Colorado Association of School Boards. He became a partner in Miller & Swearingen, which specialized in education law, including labor law, governmental law, civil rights, disability rights, and contract law. His private practice included numerous Colorado school districts as clients, as well as a small general practice. For the last four years, he has been an attorney with The Animal Law Center, LLC, which handles only animal law cases. He is the primary trial counsel for the ALC. He has also been qualified and testified as an expert in animal law.
Mr. Swearingen was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1973. He is admitted to the Federal District Court for Colorado and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and is a member of the Colorado Bar Association and a member of the Animal Law Defense Foundation.
Mr. Swearingen is also very active in dog sports. He owns and trains German Shepherds. In addition to AKC events, he is also a 30+ year member of a German dog sport organization. The Deutscher Verband der Gebrauchshundsportvereine (“DVG”). He is a founding member of Centennial Schutzhund Club, and has been a training director for the club and held several regional offices with the Canadian/American arm of the organization. Schutzhund is a working dog sport which is roughly equivalent to police dog training. Over the years, he has evaluated thousands of working breed dogs, for their temperament and ability to do tracking, obedience, and bite work.
