John P. Leopold

The Honorable John P. Leopold is a mediator/arbitrator/special master/statutory judge at JAMS (Denver) and has worked in this capacity since November, 2006. He is a graduate of Colby College (BA: 1968) and the University of Denver Sturm College of Law (JD: 1974). He was in private law practice from 1974 – 1987. Governor Roy Romer appointed him to the 18th Judicial District Court where he served from 1987 – 2006 as a district judge. He was chief judge of the 18th Judicial District from 2002 – 2006. He is a member of the Colorado Bar Association, the Arapahoe County Bar Association (president: 1985 – 1986), the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, and is a Fellow and director of the Academy of Court Appointed Masters. He also was a Trustee of the Colorado Bar Foundation. He served as president of the Colorado District Judges Association and vice president of the Colorado Trial Judges Council. He is a member of the University of Denver Sturm College of Law Alumni Council (Chair: 2008 – 2010). He was lead faculty for the Colorado Judicial Branch’s Advanced New Judge Orientation from 2000 – 2006. The Sturm College of Law awarded him its Alumni Professionalism Law Star in 2013. In 2012, the Arapahoe County Bar Association presented him with its third Martin P. Miller Lifetime Achievement Award.
