Judge Borchers earned an A.B. degree from Ripon College in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law in December 1970. Judge Borchers earned an M.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Northern Colorado and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Colorado - Denver.
 
Following law school, Borchers served on active duty as a Judge Advocate General Corps officer for the United States Army. He served as a district judge in the Seventeenth Judicial District from 1984 to 1991, and then as a full-time United States magistrate judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado for eight years.
 
Since 1999, Judge Borchers has mediated and arbitrated hundreds of civil cases, including commercial disputes, professional negligence, personal injury, and domestic issues. He has also served as a specially appointed district judge and as a special master.
