Craig B. Shaffer

Honorable Craig Shaffer (ret.) was a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District of Colorado from January 2001 to June 2018. Judge Shaffer graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1976 and received his juris doctor cum laude from Tulane University's School of Law in 1979. Judge Shaffer is a member of the Judicial Conference's Advisory Committee on Civil Rules. He has been an adjunct faculty member with the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law for the past fourteen years, teaching courses on pretrial practice and electronic discovery, and is a member of the faculty of the Annual ALI/ABA Environmental Litigation Seminar. Judge Shaffer currently is a member of the Judicial Advisory Board for the Sedona Conference and the Advisory Board for the Georgetown University Law Center's Advanced eDiscovery Institute. He is a frequent presenter at conferences and seminars dealing with electronic discovery in both civil and criminal litigation, including presentations organized by the Sedona Conference Institute, the Federal Judicial Center, BNA, the ABA, the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Georgetown University Law Center's Advanced E-Discovery Institute, and the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS). Judge Shaffer is a co-author of “Looking Past the Debate: Proposed Revisions to the Federal Rules of Evidence,” The Federal Courts Law Review (September 2013), and the author of “The 'Burdens' of Applying Proportionality,” The Sedona Conference Journal (Fall 2015), and “'Defensible' by What Standard?,” The Sedona Conference Journal (Fall 2012).
