L. William Schmidt, Esq., is a retired estate planning attorney. He is still admitted to practice in Colorado and Texas. During his active practice, he was listed in Best Lawyers in America® and Colorado Super Lawyers, and was named a “Five Star Wealth Manager” by 5280 Magazine. A frequent speaker and educator, Mr. Schmidt appeared on programs for the American College of Trust and Estate Council (ACTEC), the Notre Dame Estate Planning Institute, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys, Continuing Legal Education in Colorado, and the Denver University College of Law. He is the author of six books on the subjects of estate and charitable planning.
Mr. Schmidt has served on numerous nonprofit boards and committees, including The Denver Foundation, Goodwill Industries of Denver, Lutheran Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital, and Children's Colorado Hospital. For his leadership, he was awarded the Denver Foundation Philanthropic Leadership Award (2004), the Bonfils Blood Center Foundation Leadership Award (2007), and the first Philanthropic Legacy Award from The Denver Foundation (2018).
Mr. Schmidt is still a member of the Denver, Colorado, and American Bar Associations. He was active in the Rocky Mountain Estate Planning Council (founder and past-president), the Denver Estate Planning Council, the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (Fellow and past Colorado state chair), and the Denver Planning Giving Roundtable (past member of board of directors). Mr. Schmidt received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and his B.A. from the University of Colorado. During his practice, he was a partner at Holland& Hart, founded his own law firm, served as Senior Trust Officer at First Western Trust Bank, and was a Senior Vice President for Business Development at BOK Financial Wealth Management. He is a Captain in the Judge Advocate General (USAF) Air Force retired reserve.
