Stan Hilkey was appointed by Governor Hickenlooper as the next Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Public Safety (DPS) in May 2014. Hilkey was previously the sheriff in Mesa County and brought to his new position more than 28 years of public safety experience in the criminal justice system involving areas such as patrol operations, investigations and critical incident management. In addition to his law enforcement and diversion experience, Mr. Hilkey managed wildland fires and emergency situations. Mr. Hilkey oversees the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Colorado State Patrol, the Division of Criminal Justice, the Division of Fire Prevention and Control, the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Colorado School Safety Resource Center. Hilkey was elected Sheriff in 2002 after working 17 years in the Mesa County Sheriff's Office as a lieutenant, sergeant and deputy sheriff. As the agency's CEO, Hilkey managed and led a variety of public safety services, and he created and managed agency budgets and grants both in times of growth and in times of cutbacks.
