Stanley M. Johanson
The University of Texas at AustinProfessor Stanley M. Johanson, Esq., holds the James A. Elkins Centennial Chair in Law at The University of Texas, where he teaches courses on Wills & Estates, Estate Planning and Property. He is a graduate of Yale University (B.S. 1955), the University of Washington School of Law School (LL.B. 1958), and Harvard Law School (LL.M. 1963), where he was a Teaching Fellow from 1961 to 1963. Professor Johanson has been voted by the students to receive Teaching Excellence awards on a number of occasions, most recently in 2011 and 2012. He is an elected member of The University of Texas Academy of Distinguished Teachers. Professor Johanson has received the Treat Award for Excellence from the National College of Probate Judges, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Real Estate, Probate and Trust Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, the Outstanding Tax Lawyer award from the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Texas, and the endowed Massey Teaching Excellence Award at the Law School, and has been elected to the Estate Planning Hall of Fame by the National Association of Estate Planning Councils. In 2008, a group of Professor Johanson's students from the 1960s established the Stanley Johanson Endowed Fund for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship. Since 1972, Professor Johanson has given BAR/BRI Bar Review lectures to students preparing for the bar examination in a number of states. His publications include Johanson's Texas Probate Code Annotated (2012-published annually), Gilbert's Law Summary on Wills (2010), and Wills, Trusts & Estates (7th ed. 2005; co-author), a law school casebook adopted at over 120 American law schools. Professor Johanson is a Life Member of the American Law Institute, and a member of the American College of Tax Counsel, the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel, and the International Academy of Trust and Estate Counsel. He has been a visiting professor at a number of law schools, and is a frequent lecturer at CLE programs in various states.
