Derek Turner, Esq., grew up in Fort Collins and studied Philosophy and History at CU-Boulder between backpacking trips to the wilderness areas of Colorado. After graduating with a law degree from the University of Colorado Law School, he served as a law clerk for Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hobbs, Jr. Following the clerkship, Derek worked as an Assistant Attorney General with the Colorado Department of Law Water Resources and Water Conservation units from 2012 to 2016, representing the Division of Water Resources, the Board of Examiners of Water Well Construction and Pump Installation Contractors, and the Colorado Water Conservation Board on matters in Colorado water courts and District Courts. He then joined the City of Loveland City Attorney’s Office in 2016 as counsel to the Loveland Water and Power Department, litigating water court matters on behalf of Loveland and advising the municipal power, wastewater, water, and broadband utilities on all legal matters, and counseling the Parks and Recreation Department on water rights and real estate acquisitions and matters. In 2024, Derek returned to the Colorado Department of Law as the First Assistant Attorney General of the Water Resources Unit, where he supervises the Assistant Attorneys General and paralegals that work on behalf of the Division of Water Resources in all intrastate water court and administrative matters.
