Derek Turner, Esq., is the First Assistant Attorney General for the Water Resources Unit at the Colorado Department of Law. The Unit is comprised of Assistant Attorneys General and paralegals that work on behalf of the Division of Water Resources in all intrastate water court and administrative matters. Derek started his career in water law as a law clerk for Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hobbs, Jr, and served for more than four years as an Assistant Attorney General with the Water Resources and Water Conservation units, representing the Division of Water Resources, the Board of Examiners of Water Well Construction and Pump Installation Contractors, and the Colorado Water Conservation Board on matters in Colorado water courts and District Courts. He then joined the City of Loveland City Attorney's Office in 2016 as counsel to the Loveland Water and Power Department, litigating water court matters on behalf of Loveland and advising the municipal power, wastewater, water, and broadband utilities. In 2024, he returned to the Department of Law in his current position.
