John B. Viverito
Office of the Colorado Attorney GeneralJohn Viverito, Esq., has been with the Colorado Department of Law for 14 years and is currently a Senior Assistant Attorney General II representing the Marijuana and Liquor Enforcement Divisions. John graduated from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago (University of Illinois Chicago School of Law) and started his career working as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago's Department of Law, where he practiced for eight years. While at the City of Chicago, he had over 20 jury trials to verdict and defended the City of Chicago's Department of Revenue in workers compensation administrative hearings. John moved to Colorado in 2008 and joined a private insurance defense firm, then acted as in-house counsel for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. He joined the Colorado Department of Law in 2011 in the Conservation Easement Litigation Unit where the team received the 2014 Attorney General Award for Exceptional Performance for the team's work in resolving 170 separately filed district court actions involving complex legal issues resulting in the recovery of $100 million in tax revenue. In 2013, John was part of the team tasked with advising the Marijuana Enforcement Division on implementing the first emergency rules for the regulation of retail cannabis in the state of Colorado. The team also developed and drafted the first permanent retail cannabis rules and simultaneously revised the medical cannabis rules for the Marijuana Enforcement Division. John has handled over 45 administrative hearings and administrative appeals. He works closely with the clients to resolve complex cases, participates in the rulemaking process, and now focuses his efforts on handling litigation matters and devising efficient litigation protocols. Since 2021, John has co-authored the Investigations and Enforcement chapter of the Attorney General Alliance's Cannabis Law Deskbook.
